According to reports from transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Thibaut Courtois appears to have reached an agreement with Real Madrid to extend his contract.
The Real Madrid board considers the Belgian goalkeeper a key player for the team, and Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho is also said to share the club’s management’s view.
Once the final verbal agreements have been settled, Courtois is expected to visit Real Madrid’s headquarters to sign his new contract.
It is worth remembering that the Belgian international goalkeeper’s current contract expires on June 30, 2027. For this reason, club president Florentino Perez wants to finalize the new agreement before January, when Courtois will be free to negotiate with any club.
Thibaut Courtois was born in Bree, Belgium, on May 11, 1992. He began his professional career at Genk, where he made his first-team debut in 2009. He was still a teenager when he became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, and his performances helped Genk win the Belgian league title in the 2010โ11 season.
Chelsea noticed his progress and signed him in 2011, but instead of moving straight to England, Courtois joined Atlรฉtico Madrid on loan.
Courtois spent three seasons at Atlรฉtico Madrid, where he gained experience and established himself as a top goalkeeper. He won the Europa League in 2012, the UEFA Super Cup later that year and the Copa del Rey in 2013.
The biggest success came in the 2013โ14 season, when Atlรฉtico won La Liga ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid. The team also reached the Champions League final, where it lost to Real Madrid after extra time. Courtois returned to Chelsea that summer after making a name for himself in Spanish football.
At Chelsea, Courtois competed with Petr ฤech for the starting spot before becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. He helped the team win the Premier League and League Cup in his first season, under manager Josรฉ Mourinho.
Chelsea won another league title in 2016โ17, this time with Antonio Conte in charge. Courtois was also named the Premier League’s Golden Glove winner that season. After four years at the club, he left England in 2018 to join Real Madrid.
His first season at Real Madrid was not always easy, but Courtois gradually settled into the team. He helped the club win La Liga in 2019โ20 and became an important part of the side. His best performances came in the 2021โ22 season, especially in the Champions League.
Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the final, with Courtois making several key saves to keep a clean sheet. He was named Player of the Match and later won the Yashin Trophy, which recognises the world’s best goalkeeper.
In August 2023, Courtois suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery and kept him out for most of the 2023โ24 season. He returned to action towards the end of the campaign and was back in the team for the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid won the match 2โ0, giving Courtois another Champions League title. His return was an important moment after months of recovery, and he continued his career with the Spanish club.
Courtois has also played a major part in Belgium’s national team. He made his senior international debut in 2011 and represented his country at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. Belgium finished third at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and Courtois won the Golden Glove as the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
His performances during the competition included several important saves, helping Belgium achieve the best World Cup finish in the country’s history.
Over the years, Courtois has won league titles in Belgium, England and Spain, as well as major European trophies with Atlรฉtico Madrid and Real Madrid. His career has included success, difficult periods and a serious injury, but he has continued to compete at the highest level.
Known for his height, quick reactions and ability to make saves from close range, he has become one of the most successful goalkeepers of his generation.
