Gears of War: E-Day is the next major game in the Gears of War series. The story takes players back to Emergence Day, one of the most important events in the history of Sera.
The game is set fourteen years before the first Gears of War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as they face the beginning of the Locust invasion.
Marcus and Dom are much younger in E-Day than they were in the original games. At this point in their lives, they have not yet become the soldiers players know from the original Gears of War. The events of Emergence Day will change their lives and their view of the world around them.
The Locust invasion is at the center of the story. Before Emergence Day, people on Sera had no idea that an enemy like the Locust existed. When the attacks begin, humanity is caught completely off guard and has to deal with a threat unlike anything it has faced before. The events of that day will eventually lead to the long conflict that defines the Gears of War series.
Going back to Emergence Day also gives the game a chance to explore a period that has mostly been mentioned through the other games in the series.
Fans already know how important that day was, but E-Day focuses directly on what happened when the Locust first appeared. The story takes place at the beginning of the conflict, when the situation on Sera is changing very quickly.
The gameplay will feel familiar to anyone who has played a Gears of War game before. E-Day keeps the third-person shooting and cover system that the series is known for, while also introducing new gameplay elements. The developers are building the game around the same basic style of combat that has been part of Gears of War since the beginning.
Marcus and Dom are also an important part of the game. E-Day shows the two characters at a much earlier point in their lives and gives more attention to their relationship before the events of the original game.
Their friendship will develop during a period when both of them are dealing with the sudden arrival of the Locust and the destruction caused by the invasion.
The game is being developed by The Coalition using Unreal Engine 5. The technology is being used to create the environments, characters, lighting and visual effects of E-Day. The developers are also building the game as a new entry in the series rather than remaking the original Gears of War.
For the series, E-Day means going back to where the story began. Instead of continuing the timeline established by the more recent games, The Coalition is returning to a period that has always been an important part of Gears of War lore. This also allows the game to show Marcus, Dom and the Locust invasion at a point that players have never experienced in this way before.
Gears of War: E-Day is therefore set during one of the most important moments in the series. It tells the story of the beginning of the Locust invasion, follows a younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, and returns to the events that shaped the Gears of War universe.
For anyone familiar with the series, it is a chance to see how the conflict started and what happened to these characters before the events of the first game.
