YouTube‘s new interface is rolling out to Android and iOS devices, bringing several changes to the way sections are arranged. The main updates include moving the Subscriptions tab to the top of the screen and giving Shorts greater visibility.
In recent weeks, there had already been reports about a new version of the YouTube mobile app featuring several changes to its design and navigation.
These included a redesigned navigation bar and a new position for the section dedicated to subscribed channels. However, the changes have not been well received by everyone and have already sparked criticism online.
The new interface is currently rolling out on Android and iOS. It appears that the update is being delivered directly through Google’s servers, meaning users do not necessarily need to install a new version of the app.
With this change, YouTube is moving away from its traditional bottom navigation bar with five buttons and reorganizing access to its various sections.
In particular, the Subscriptions tab is no longer displayed at the bottom of the screen. Instead, users can access it from the Home screen by swiping horizontally.
There do not appear to be any major functional changes. Most of the updates are related to the app’s appearance and the way its content is organized.
Even so, the new layout has already received considerable criticism from users, as shown by several discussions on Reddit.
Another new feature allows users to create a personalized feed in the Home tab, making it possible to organize content according to their interests.
As we reported last May, YouTube had already started testing a new mobile interface with a different arrangement of its tabs.
In that version, the Subscriptions section was moved from the bottom navigation bar to a navigation bar at the top of the screen, allowing users to switch between sections with horizontal swipes. The aim was to make browsing between different feeds easier and faster.
With the current interface, however, the Explore menu no longer appears to be available from the main screen, at least based on what we have been able to verify so far.
